![]() ![]() By producing monthly breakfast and weekly lunch meals, we’ve been able to feed the neighborhood and keep it safe by limiting exposure to the missions where risks to COVID-19 are increased. Contributions to the "Pay It Forward" Meal Program with RE:HER have helped provide hot meals to the homeless and support consistent employment at Nickel Diner. RE:HER is a charitable organization for female-owned restaurants in Los Angeles, created amidst the COVID-19 pandemic by women who own restaurants in Los Angeles. Stay tuned for the cookbook.Ĭlick above to view our interview with the James Beard Foundation, where we were recently showcased as part of the James Beard Awards: Stories of Resilience and Leadership, and as RE:HER Grant Recipients. We know we're going to leave a little hole in the fabric of downtown and a big hole in our hearts missing all the wonderful folks we've fed for so many years. We will continue to focus on feeding our food insecure neighbors - they're the ones we worry about the most. We are so proud of what we've accomplished - with our customers, our loyal staff of over 10 years and especially the DTLA community. Our restaurant model is unsustainable in these modern times. Rising costs, a crowded food scene, the changing nature of downtown, have created challenges to keeping our doors open. However the margin for error is not as generous as it once was. We've stood strong and battled many things over the past few years. ![]() We became that and so much more, thanks to the community who embraced two women opening a Diner on Skid Row. When we opened in 2008 at the height of the last recession, the goal was to create a neighborhood restaurant that offered handcrafted food at affordable prices. Kim presented us a bill of $10.for a tip for her girls. We dug deep in our pockets and got considerably more that that for them! We left with a smile on our faces, our tummys full of delicious food and a good story to tell all our friends we visited for the rest of the trip! Hey, KIM, We'll be back. The past 15 years have been an extraordinary journey, and we'd like to thank all the people in our downtown community and beyond who’ve supported us. We got a chuckle out of that! Everything was fabulous. Loved the cute country decor and amusing menu.Who invented ":southern soup"? We asked and it is cornbread and buttermilk. "Sit right down and we will find something to feed you", she said! She and her staff were cleaning up and getting ready for the next day's service but we assured her that was fine with us! We asked if the fried chicken was already cooked and she assured us it was, so we ordered it.We ordered several side vegetables (our weakness!) and they brought all the food we had ordered plus a few samples of things we had NOT ordered. Out from the back of the restaurant came the owner, Kim.who overheard our dilemma. She thought and thought and even another diner tried to figure out where she could send us. In we went, hungrier than we could stand! The first young lady we saw told us the restaurant was closed! Whaw! We were telling her the story of our quest to find the restaurant and asked her where we could find another spot to eat. We invited him to come inside for an iced tea, but he declined. As we drove on our quest, he pulled his car beside us and told us to follow him and he drove us to the restaurant. He told us to go to Maple Street Diner and gave. On a trip north, we found ourselves in Carrollton, GA.HUNGRY! Stopped to use the potty at a Chick Filet and asked a good looking gentleman where we could get a good home cooked meal.
